The station's playlist primarily consists of the current best pop hits, but it is diversified with a varied selection of greatest hits and some 90’s dance hits. Sun FM enlivens the mornings every day of the week as Simon Grundy sets the tone and leads the conversations from 6am to 10am on weekdays. Since 1 May 2024, the radio has been rebranded as Nation Radio North East, with local programming on weekdays from 6am to 11am, while the other hours feature networked programming from Nation Radio.
